KINGMAN – Kingman Healing Hooves recently launched a new class for children to learn basic art skills.
“Learn About Horses Through the Arts” joins KHH’s lineup of equine therapeutic and educational offerings.
Children learn fundamental art skills, watercolor and acrylic painting, photography and sculpting. They work with the horses as their live subjects on a variety of projects being taught by volunteers with fine art educational backgrounds.
Kassie Schuerr, founder and director of KHH, said the program was made possible by utilizing art grants from multiple local organizations including a Kingman Regional Medical Center grant, a Youth Arts Engagement Grant through the Arizona Commission of the Arts, and a UniSource Energy Services Community Impact Grant.
Schuerr learned from a colleague that the art grants had become available and devised a way to get kids who like horses into art and vice versa.
“A mutual educator mentioned that some art grants were available, and I am always looking for an opportunity to get something new for our community,” said Schuerr. “I think our kids miss out on a lot of things here.”
“I wanted to add something that is unique and allows us to get kids interested in art and get some basic skills. Those that are interested in horses can learn art and then the two are joined together.”
Schuerr said the kids enjoy the classes and the horses don’t have any complaints, either.
“The horses love the attention – when we are getting them ready – but they are used to having lessons every day, so this is just another activity for them.”
Kingman Healing Hooves introduced the program earlier this year. It will run until the end of June. The classes are open to children ages eight to 18, with 20 total spots open for each class.
All classes are free to area children. If interested in having your child participate, email kingmanhealinghooves@gmail.com.

KRMC Continues Supporting Our Community with Grant to Kingman’s Healing Hooves
KRMC is a wonderful yearly supporter of Kingman’s Healing Hooves programs with grants including this year’s $8,500 for the fall 2022-summer 2023. The grant will be utilized to teach safe horsemanship for ages 4 and up, Equine Assisted Learning programs, Academy Horsemanship lessons for able body and riders with disabilities, equine care and safety through our unique out-reach programs and field trips to the facility.
KHH remains open year-round utilizing an intuitive team of horses and highly trained instructors to build self-esteem, confidence, empathy and kindness through animal-human interactions.
Bishop is an example of what we accomplish daily. He came to KHH three years ago to help with the transition of moving from another state, starting a new school, and continuing with Equine Therapy services before moving to Kingman. He was very unsure of himself with the horses, always asking “Is this right?” when walking the horse with a task to accomplish, low muscle tone and balance, and an overall fear of falling off the horse. Spending time on the ground before riding helped build Bishop’s confidence with his ability to communicate effectively with Smokey while walking, stopping, and steering. He also keeps a journal of each lesson with skills worked on that aid in both school activities and life skills.
Bishop has progressed to walking Smokey confidently on the ground and riding by himself without second guessing his choices, sitting tall and balanced in the saddle, and his journal has developed from drawings to small paragraphs explaining what his lessons entailed. He leaves each week beaming with excitement and confidence for what he accomplished and shares how much he loves the horses and instructors working with him.
Thank you KRMC for making a difference in our community.
